While canvassing the forest in a grid pattern in search of a wounded deer, I came across this critter:
I’ve contacted the Virginia Herpetological Society who identified it as an Eastern Box Turtle and urged me to add the encounter to their catalog.

I’ve contacted the Virginia Herpetological Society who identified it as an Eastern Box Turtle and urged me to add the encounter to their catalog.
I believe the red eyes make it a male, whereas a female would have yellow or orange eyes. Then again, I might have it backwards.
